St. Jerome's Paints the Pantry
The Painters of St. Jeromes at the Weymouth Food PantryOn Saturday, January 8th, as a part of their confirmation classes, twenty six ninth and tenth grade youths from St. Jerome’s parish painted several rooms and the corridors of the Weymouth Food Pantry. The youths were assisted in the community service project by ten adult religious education facilitators and parents as well as several volunteer professional painters, along with St Jerome’s pastor, Father Bob Blaney.
The project came about as the result of a connection by St Jerome’s parishioner Trish Carlson with the food pantry and coordination with Mary Ellen Cassani, parish faith formation director. The generous parishioners of St Jerome’s covered the costs of the paint and materials used on the project as well as a lunch for the volunteers. At the conclusion of the project, and the clean-up completed, Father Bob celebrated .Mass for the volunteers.

Tim and Barbara Donovan were the St. Jerome’s volunteer planners for the project breaking the group down into smaller teams with individual assignments such as washing baseboards, cleaning windows, dusting door frames, applying masking tape, cutting in edges and rolling on paint. Tim and Joe Striano, of Jackson Square Paint, (whose painting knowledge and assistance throughout has been invaluable) prepared the area the previous day laying down drop cloths and initially masking areas not to be painted.

The pantry, which is located in the Tim Donovan and Father Bob Blaney discuss the projectformer Immaculate Conception school, opened in 1987 with a little food and a lot of love in its heart. There was then, and is now, a real need for a food pantry in Weymouth. The pantry, which is open on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, as well as one Thursday afternoon each month, feeds the hungry and those at risk of going hungry. It serves the young and the old, families and individuals, the working poor and those who cannot work because of poor health, age or incapacitating mental illness. Some are in or trying to recover from a life crisis. Anyone in Weymouth who needs help is welcome. Weymouth Food Pantry currently serves approximately 500 Weymouth families each month.

Our heart-felt thanks to all those volunteers from St. Jerome's parish who, through their work, have made the food pantry a more pleasant and welcoming environment for our clients as well as our staff of volunteers.
