Weekend Back Packs end 68-hours of Hunger

Over the last four years, we have strengthened our relationship with Weymouth Public Schools and now have roughly 320 children on our back pack program across 9 schools. When students experience food insecurity, it compromises their ability to pay attention and learn, their ability to be active and engage in sports, and it affects their social interactions with teachers and peers. The program provides each child enrolled in the program with a back pack of easy to prepare meals and snacks to take home every Friday. Since implementing the program, teachers have seen a dramatic improvement in attendance, performance, and relationships among students who were affected by hunger.

The back pack menu is continuously assessed for nutritional value, and adjusted to accommodate all food allergies and dietary restrictions.

IT ALL STARTED AT ABIGAIL ADAMS…

The 2016 - 2017 school year was the worst a group of teachers at this school had seen in terms of hunger in their classrooms. Together, we launched a weekend backpack program to supply food for kids over the weekend whose parents have opted in to the program. Each child enrolled in the program takes home a backpack of food every Friday.

FOR Weymouth High School

We've worked with the high school's team of adjustment counselors to fully stock an onsite food pantry they've developed for students to discretely shop from when they need it. In addition, the Food Pantry supplies snack boxes teachers can keep in their desk drawers to draw from rather than purchasing their own snacks out of their salaries.
